UOIT graduate story: Discovering a love for writing changed everything

Posted by Andrea Brown on November 29, 2014 at 10:00 AM

christian-julalIn this entry, we'd like to introduce you to Christian Julal. Christian graduated from UOIT with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Communication in 2012. He also holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto. Our thanks to UOIT Alumni for sharing Christian's story!

"Believe in yourself and never be complacent. If there's something you want, go after it." Taking this advice from his professors to heart, Christian is already an editor, author, educator, communicator and dancer.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communication from UOIT in 2012, Christian enrolled at the University of Toronto. He recently graduated with a Bachelor of Education and completed an internship at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic School where he taught drama and realized that he can make a difference in the lives of his students.

UOIT graduate story: Empowered to lead

Posted by Andrea Brown on November 28, 2014 at 9:00 AM

I credit my decision to attend UOIT for my undergraduate degree with heavily influencing my perspective on what it takes to build a better a better community, empower people and solve problems. Students enrolled in the ‘First Class’ at UOIT were on campus at a time when opportunities to shape the future of the university were only limited by our imagination and willingness to invest in its future. It is my pleasure to be indebted to the notion that creating change is driven by people who take action and that leadership is a state of mind rather than a rank, position or credential. Professionally, I have been able to find opportunities within organizations using the same approach to creating change and problem solving. Being able to anticipate barriers, ask questions and use evidence to solve problems are skills that are invaluable in all contexts.

UOIT graduate story: Practicum paved the way to a great career

Posted by Andrea Brown on November 27, 2014 at 4:00 PM

2014-12-23-20-26-13-51425937_(2)After obtaining a Police Foundations Diploma, I enrolled in the Criminology and Justice Bridge program as I was provided the opportunity to put my college credits towards a university degree. After two busy years, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Criminology and Justice. Shortly thereafter, I was successful in obtaining a position as a Probation and Parole Officer. I believe the hands-on experience I gained through the practicum course at UOIT assisted me in my chosen career path.

UOIT graduate story: Mentoring shaped my experience

Posted by Andrea Brown on November 27, 2014 at 10:00 AM

FSSH_AmandaCoutureIn 2004, I launched my undergraduate career in the Criminology and Justice program with the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. As a small university, UOIT provided me with incredible opportunities to be mentored by professors in multiple research and conference initiatives. These experiences solidified my commitment to academia and provided me with the skills necessary to complete a Master's degree in UOIT's Criminology graduate program, where my research was funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program (OGS).

UOIT graduate story: The value of experience

Posted by Andrea Brown on November 26, 2014 at 4:30 PM

With great confidence, I can say that UOIT's hands-on teaching approach in the Communication program really prepared me for my current career. It was greatly beneficial to be part FSSH_IrisSinilong2of classes that gave insights on the different fields of media. From writing mock press releases, devising advertising strategies and creating business plans, my experience served as an essential groundwork. The professors were especially wonderful. I loved the fact that they were so approachable and were always available to answer any of my questions! They genuinely cared about their students and extended help in any way they can. My time at UOIT felt like being part of one caring family!

My advice to high school students?
