Spotlight: Mama D's Jamaican Cuisine

Posted by Ryan LePage on March 16, 2018 at 9:13 AM

Well my Student Speak readers, this is my last blog for the year (and likely ever!) so to all who read the blog and/or tried the food at the various “student reviewed and approved” locations across Oshawa and the rest of Durham, thank-you! The feature this month is a focus on the food of the islands, as we enter the delight that is Mama D’s Jamaican Cuisine. Mama D’s is located at 1128 Simcoe St. N., conveniently less than a minute from the bus stop, in the plaza besides Little Caesars pizza. It is more North on Simcoe, relatively close to Taunton Rd. Access for students is easy! Take the 401 Simcoe bus, from either the downtown or north campus, and get off the bus near the plaza, and bam, all the Jamaican food you could want awaits!

Hulk Hoagies CheeseSteaks: Hoagify if you dare!

Posted by Ryan LePage on February 13, 2018 at 10:57 AM

Hello Student Speak readers! I hope you're ready for a mountain of food today, as we enter the realm of glorious, glorious cheesesteaks! This month, the feature is a new local Oshawa spot right downtown, called Hulk Hoagies CheeseSteaks. They are located at 92 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa, ON. This is right near the downtown location, just north of the Bond/Simcoe intersection, the last store on the left-hand side. To get to this glorious new food spot from the north location, it would be the 401 Simcoe south, and then a short walk from the bus stop. For those already downtown—save yourself the bus because it is just the walk! For those driving, it is on-street paid (until 6 p.m.) parking downtown. In case you didn’t want to do any commuting at all...they deliver!

Spotlight: Copper Branch

Posted by Ryan LePage on December 12, 2017 at 4:16 PM

To all of you Student Speak readers, I would like to wish you all good luck on your exams! I know it is about that time of year, you can do it!

This month, I have ventured into the world of vegan food, which is unusual for me when I usually jump to the menu items with bacon. I will give you my take on some plant-based deliciousness, and to make this happen I made two visits to Copper Branch in Brooklin, nestled at 66 Baldwin Street on the left side of the road going north. In terms of access, by bus from the campus you would need to take the Taunton 915 west, and then from the Brock Street/Taunton Road intersection, take the 302 Brock Street bus north. For those driving, there is on-street parking, as well as a parking lot behind the building.

Hello, Student Speak readers! Another year of enjoying delicious local food begins! While the blog on Big Boy’s Burrito was to be my last—I could not give up the desire to blog, so I have returned for four more. This spotlight focuses on a new poutinerie that has opened up across the street from the north Oshawa location, called It’s All Gravy Poutinerie. Located at 53 Conlin Road East, in the plaza with Campus Corners, beside the RBC. If you want to find this fine family-owned establishment, it is as easy as getting to the north location, and then walking across the street!

Spotlight: Big Boy's Burrito!

Posted by Ryan LePage on May 8, 2017 at 2:06 PM

Hello Student Speak readers! I welcome you to my very last blog as the Student Speak food blogger for this wonderful university. It was an amazing run involving a lot of delicious food, and I hope you also have enjoyed all the eats over the last two academic years. This last blog will focus on a new Mexican spot that just opened up right in downtown Oshawa, at 24 King Street East, where the Patty Shack used to be. It is located right beside Buster Rhino’s near the Regent Theatre. With respect to finding this delicious new spot, it is right in downtown Oshawa, so if you took the 401 Simcoe bus, simply walk east on King Street for literally two or three minutes and it will be right there!

SPOTLIGHT: Cosy's Diner

Posted by Ryan LePage on April 10, 2017 at 2:52 PM

The second last blog! Given the timing, I wanted to wish all of you reading luck on your final exams, and remember that a mark does not define you. This time we are spotlighting a restaurant that is relatively new – Cosy’s Diner! They celebrated their one-year anniversary on March 6. Nestled in the Rossland & Stevenson plaza, Cosy's is a Denny’s-style family-owned restaurant located at 500 Rossland Road West, Oshawa, ON. Being located close to both Paul Dwyer Catholic High School & R.S. McLaughlin CVI, and having a Durham Region Transit bus stop right out front, it is very student-friendly. From campus, jump on the 916 bus with your student card, and arrive in 15 minutes!

Charley Ronick's Pub & Restaurant Food Review

Posted by Ryan LePage on March 7, 2017 at 3:03 PM

I know that some time has passed since the last blog, unfortunately, my responsibilities as a graduate student took over for a period of time – but here we are back in action! Charley Ronick's is a pub and restaurant located at 3050 Garden Street East, in Whitby. It is located in the plaza at the northwest corner of Rossland and Garden, with Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills.

First of all, let me just say that this place has some delicious food! Initially, I was not planning to actually blog about Charley Ronick's, but the food was so good that I knew that the world needed to be made more aware of a delicious spot located right in north Whitby! For those who watch sports, they have TVs everywhere, including the booths. Each booth has a TV built right into the wall! Combined with deals on wings and other items, and you can imagine its popularity for sporting events.
