Introducing Keisha Deoraj, Student Speak blogger

Name: Keisha Deoraj

Program of Study: I am currently in the second semester of my Master of Arts in Education, although this is my (almost) seventh year of study at Ontario Tech! I previously completed my Bachelor of Science in Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry (2015) and my Bachelor of Education (2018) with our lovely institution. In 2016, I also attended our neighbour, Durham College, for a post-graduate degree in Environmental Technology.

Why did you choose your program?

I chose to return to Ontario Tech again and again because the connections that I make here are so valuable to me. I love the sense of community that I feel whenever I take part in classes, workshops, extra-curriculars and events.

I chose to do graduate school with Ontario Tech because of the 100 per cent online format. Being an Occasional Teacher requires that I work during the day. The format allows me to pursue my studies, while also being able to make a living.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

I wish I knew what I wanted to do after I graduate! Though I am extremely detail oriented, I have learned the hard way the dangers of planning out every specific detail of my life.

That said, I have a general sense of what I would like to do. However, I am open to what comes my way because I whole-heartedly believe that the universe has my back!

What is your favourite thing about Ontario Tech?

My favourite thing about Ontario Tech is its proximity to my own hometown, Ajax. Also, I especially love the wide range of foods that are available all around the downtown location.

What is your favourite can’t-miss Ontario Tech event?

My can’t-miss event at Ontario Tech is Science Rendezvous!

What is your favourite thing to do in the Durham Region?

My favourite thing to do in Durham Region is to be by the water. Whether it be by the stream that runs behind our beautiful campus, or by the Ajax and Pickering Waterfronts, I am always happiest when I am near water.

What is your favourite Durham Region restaurant?

How do I choose just one good restaurant in Durham Region?! There are so many!

What would you tell first-year you, in one sentence?

If I could tell first-year me some advice in one sentence, it would be the following: stay brave, trust that it will all be okay, and know that you do not have to go it alone.
