Name: Shelly Kowalski

Program of study: Communication and Digital Media Studies

Year of study: Third year

Why did you choose your program? I chose the Communication program at UOIT because it would give me the opportunity to learn the theory behind how and why we communicate, and how technology has a huge impact on that.

What do you want to do after you graduate? There are so many options for communication graduates, and I’m excited to see where it takes me. While I don’t have any formal plans, the idea of finding a role in marketing or communication at an innovative company like Google or Hubspot, or some kind of tech start-up, would be amazing.

What’s the one food item you couldn’t live without? Brie. There is no way I could live in a Brie-less world.

Favourite TV or movie quote: “We all change, when you think about it. We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s okay, that’s good, you’ve got to keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.” – Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who

Favourite TV show or movie: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I’ve watched it about five times in the past year and every time I do I always find something new that I never noticed. Favourite TV show? Doctor Who, hands down. If you’ve never seen either, you definitely should. They’re on Netflix!

Favourite past Student Speak blog: Can I Use UOIT’s Indigenous Student Services? (Hint: The Answers is yes!)

Top 3 bucket list to-do items:

  • Visit Scotland
  • Live in another country
  • Learn another language

Who is your career idol? Brene Brown is an amazing speaker and makes research look cool! I’m also a fan of Arlene Dickenson.

Ice cream or pizza? Pizza!

Beach vacation or Euro-trip? Euro-trip!

Cats or dogs? Cats.

What’s your favourite book? Wild by Cheryl Strayed is a great novel, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I also love Jodi Picoult’s earlier novels.

Favourite Durham Region restaurant? Kb in Whitby is phenomenal, but I’m also a huge fan of Felicio’s!
