Happy New Year to all of you beautiful readers out there and I hope that 2016 is a positive one for you! With the winter semester underway you must be thinking "now where can I get some delicious new food to try?" Or maybe, more specifically, you're wondering if there's a place where you can customize your own delicious hot dog.
Fear not, for I have your answer, as this month I had the opportunity to review Smoke’s Weinerie, a new restaurant that opened up right beside Smoke’s Poutinerie at 77 King Street East in Oshawa! As the name implies, it's under the same Smoke’s banner as the Poutinerie, but this time, the focus is on the king of all street food: the hot dog.
Editor's note (December 4, 2017): The Oshawa location of Smoke's Weinerie has since closed. You can visit the nearest Smoke's Weinerie in Ajax, located at 85 Kingston Road, Unit #1.
When you get to the entrance, you’re met with a cheeky banner asking you (in not so school-appropriate terms) what toppings you want on your hot dog. This may be daunting given the vast array of toppings and options available, ranging from old favourites like mustard and onions to unique toppings such as poutine (yes, poutine!), Montreal smoked meat or cheddar cheese sauce.
When I got to the menu I had some difficulties trying to sort out what I really wanted. While my brain immediately did think poutine, I was torn between The Big Porker, which comes topped with chipotle pulled pork and double-smoked bacon, and the Hawaiian, featuring chipotle-pulled pork and pineapple. I opted for the Hawaiian, and as you can see by the picture above it was a delicious choice that I would easily make again. The pulled pork was very soft and well sauced, and the sweetness of the pineapple mixed well with the meat. The hot dog was great, but it's the ability to add a variety of toppings that really makes this place shine.
To finish off your dog, you can opt for a pretzel bun or a regular bun, and even choose to have it rubbed in garlic butter for a little bit of added flavour. And while enjoying your delicious wiener of choice, you can take a glance at some of the murals that line the walls that detail the "real" history of the delicious hot dog we get to enjoy today! So if you're in the mood for a meal that will help you remember the feel of summertime and backyard BBQs in this frigid weather, give Smoke's Weinerie a try.
Well, that's all, for now, my friends, I hope you enjoyed this month’s restaurant review and feel free to leave feedback and suggestions for future food blog ideas in the comments!
Good luck going into the rest of the new semester, and if you do try Smoke’s Weinerie let me know what you think!
